Chapter Twelve

The brightness of the deep blue sky hurting my eyes seemed nothing compared to the agony and strain I felt in my left arm. Also, my back and butt felt like sandpaper as the hand with an iron hold on my wrist dragged me across the desert. I managed to look up at the Inanis that tugged me along by my arm. Its oily skin glistened as it reflected the blue sky, which gave its bony build a metallic glint. My eyes trailed from Inanis’s back up to where the neck seamlessly merged with its head and edged over into its strong jaw with its massive teeth.

Pain shot through my arm and down my back as I tried to reach the hand clamped around my wrist with my free arm.

“Please,” I managed to say. My voice sounded as hoarse as my throat felt, and my words were barely audible. “Please,” I repeated. The word came out a bit stronger, but despite my efforts, the Inanis ignored me.

My fingers clawed at the hand as I tried to get a handle on what was going on. Several of the faceless creatures surrounded me as they moved at an agonizingly fast pace. Shifting my gaze from one to the other, I could recognize the shape of a human head, but they had no eyes and no noses.

With a groan, I pleaded for the Inanis to stop, but it showed no intention of doing that. In fact, it showed no sign that it had heard me at all.

“Stop. Please stop,” I said as a dizzying haze clouded my mind. My stomach started to revolt. I had already lost most of its content, but still bile rose in my throat. I did not want to puke on myself, and I tried to breathe evenly, but it felt as if air refused to reach my lungs.

Before my eyes forced themselves closed, I noticed Juni in the arms of one of those things. The girl rested her head on the shoulder of a faceless creature, but her eyes held mine. I blinked, amazed at the lack fear on the young child’s face before the blissful darkness grabbed me once again.
